Home streak comes to an end

Stephen mallett24 Nov 2013 - 09:55

Tough encounter by 2 teams looking to push to 3rd in the table started in good conditions at a well attended Kellet Road.

With injuries mounting and players drafted to the 1st XV Carnforth skipper John Edmondson had to juggle his resources. The game started as it finished a physical encounter with both sides having to fight to retain ball. Burnley had more possession but Brad Wheatman exploded through to score wide 5 - 0.
Burnley struck back and with a flowing move created an overlap to score 5 - 7.
Skipper Edmondson had to sub himslef off after 10 mins with Steven Hird making his debut on the wing with Eril Buckley moving to the centre.
Burnley pressure at the scrum and break down told and the Carnforth lineout was misfiring Burnley scored again 5 - 12
Carnforth had to rotate players again with Stephen Mallett replaced by George Hoyle for a new pairing at 2nd row with James SKitts. Clayton Steven's was having a battle at tight head and around the park at one stage challenging a few of the Burnley players over their border line tactics. The scrum was getting the ball stuck in 2nd row making it very hard for Craig Walker to get it out. It took to the 2nd half to improve things. From these scraps Mark Barratt and Kevin Hardy had to work with to just keep the pressure off Carnforth. But Burnley scored again at half time. 5- 19
Half time talk was how were Carnforth going to step up and match Burnely superior physicality. Glenn, Brian Albiston and Stuart Harrsion, were covering breakdowns and getting to rucks with Craig walker , Keith Lovering and Mark Barratt all getting stuck in
Injuries caused changes and James Skitts in only his 2nd game this season needed a breather, the backs finally saw some ball and after several runs by Dale Lowrie, Brad Wheatman supported by Erik Buckley and Matty Lloyd, Kevin Hardy crossed the line 10-19.
Both sides were tiring and having to rotate players John Edmondson was on for Erik Buckley with so many positional changes Burnley lofted a hopeful kick over to find last man was Clayton Stevens who gathered but was isolated and then unusually for a prop kicked, well with hindsight and a better ankle I’m sure he would choose another option as the Burnley players gathered the kick to score 10-26.
Canforth came back and pressured the kick off as Burnely were setting up another move on their 10m line when John Edmonson burst through to intercept and score under the posts. 17-26
Dave Fagin kept the game flowing and considering the up tempo physical game that was no easy thing to do.
