MARK BUTTERFIELD

Match report

Saturday afternoon saw Carnforth take a welcomed break from the league to play in the first round of the Lancashire Amateur Cup at home to Ormskirk F.C. from the Wigan Amateur League.
Carnforth once again had several key players missing due to work commitments and injury, but having such a big squad full of quality they were still able to field a side capable of winning the tie. There was a debut for new signing Dave Glennie at centre half who recently joined with an excellent footballing pedigree, and he did not disappoint with an excellent performance.
Rangers started the game brightly, and nearly went ahead in the fourth minute when Steele struck a post with a half volley from the edge of the box after some good play by his strike partner Shields. The first goal was not long in coming when on 8 minutes some neat football from the Carnforth midfield resulted in the ball falling at the feet of Steele whose shot deflected off an Ormskirk defender and looped over the hapless keeper to put Carnforth one up.
The quality in the two sides was now starting to show and Rangers were creating chance after chance, but Rangers were not for the first time this season guilty of some poor finishing.
The second goal did come on 26 minutes when Garwood was brought down in the box after turning his marker inside out. Gorton stepped up to Cooley slot the ball into the bottom corner.
Carnforth were rarely troubled at the back and Price in the Carnforth net was virtually a spectator. The third goal came on 40 minutes, Garwood was the scorer to keep up his excellent start to the season.
The second half was the same story as the first with Carnforth totally dominate in attack. The central midfield duo of Gorton and A.Taylor were tidy in possession, and the wing play of Garwood was causing problems for the Ormskirk defence every time he received the ball.
On 62 minutes Carnforth`s fourth goal of the game arrived, Garwood skinned his marker to reach the byline and pull the ball back to Steele who had the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net to score hie second of the game.
Rangers created many more chances with the woodwork denying us on at least three occasions, also some last ditch defending by the impressive Ormskirk centre half kept the score respectable for Ormskirk. Though the fifth goal of the game did come on 86 minutes as Garwood drilled home an unstoppable drive form 20 yards out, to cap of a man of the match performance by the young winger.
Rangers will now play away to Leyland Red Rose in the second round on October 6th.
