Meeting for the third time in a week these two sides knew each other’s game and with each team winning one of the previous fixtures each this was the decider with the added spice of it being a cup semi final. Carniny started the game the better in very blustery conditions, pinning Carrick back in their own half but just couldn’t create a clear cut chance. The breakthrough came when Joel Murray took a quick throw in to Luis White, who returned the ball. Murray passed the ball into the box and Ashton Thompson making a late run was able to side foot home after 20 mins. The Reds were unable to capitalize on their advantage and the half ended with the boys ahead.

Carrick started the second half strongly and whipped a cross in for their unmarked striker to have a free header. Luke Elliott sprung to his left to paw the ball round the post. The boys definitely knew this wasn’t going to be an easy ride. Daniel Hayburn and Aaron Calvert grew in confidence and were resolute in stopping any attack. Joel Aitcheson was huge in the middle closing every Carrick player down. Carniny were reduced to hitting on the counter and with injuries were forced into playing Luis White up front on his own. He chased every ball down and threatened to score on several occasions forcing a corner after some excellent work. Murray floated in the corner and Hayburn nodded home at the back post for 2-0. Carrick had thrown everything at the boys and credit to the team for standing firm. That was the final score when the ref blew for full time.

A great game for the boys who have made progress as a team since January and have been rewarded with a cup final. Thanks to all the parents for supporting the team on their journey.
