Carniny started brightly controlling the game through Tyler Greer, Billy Bell and Marcus Rodgers. From along ball Carniny found themselves behind. Carniny were denied a penalty when Kenzie Meharg was clipped from behind before a well timed run from Kane Carley was met with a sweet volley into the net, only to be ruled off side. Wellington had a decent chance to go two ahead only for a volley narrowly going over the bar.

The second half began with the same tempo, Carniny pushed and were denied a second penalty when a shot from the edge of the box from Marc Faulkner was blocked by a flailing arm. Carniny thought they had the equaliser shortly after when Kenzie Meharg shot went in top corner, only for the keeper to throw the ball off the back of the post. As Carniny pushed the game opened up with Wellington playing defensive and pushed Carniny from a fast break.
