The Ballymena men were determined to get something out of this game, a fact that was evident from their play right from the kick off. Carniny were first to break the deadlock when John Cassidy fired in a 20 yard shot from the right which went in off the post. The Amateurs were giving their all keeping pressure on Wellington throughout the half working hard up to the break with the back four of O'Flaherty, Greene, Hanna and McCenaghan in solid form.
In the second half Wellington tried to get back in the game but Dean Adams had only a couple of simple saves to make with most of the Rec's efforts off target. Midfield pair O'Neill and Armstrong combined well in the middle of the park with the front pairing of Whitehurst and Cummings causing problems up top, with Cummings have a few one on ones but failing to convert. As the game wore on the Amateurs needed to make the game safe and they did just that when substitute Dean Wright fired home a shot from a cross to make it 2-0 with 15 mins to go.
The Amateurs held on to their lead to see themselves in the hat for the second round draw of the Irish Cup. A great team effort and attitude displayed by all to take the win against the experienced Wellington Rec team.
