Carniny looked brightest in the first half and had the lion’s share of the play with Ciaran McGarry getting his head on the end of a Ryan McCartney free kick from the right flank on the 39th minute. The Ballymena lads looked in control throughout the half with Saintfield showing signs of frustration at the break.
The second half was a different matter however with the County Down team coming at Carniny with a high tempo and despite being reduced to ten men only ten minutes into the half Saintfield got their equaliser on 65 mins when Carniny left a man unmarked at the back post who scored from close range. They then went on to score their second with a super 25 yard strike which dipped below the Carniny bar. Their third came on the 80th minute when a Saintfield player wove his way through the middle of the park to slide the ball low into the right hand corner past the advancing Adams. Carniny tried to get a lifeline into the game but saw several attempts go close with Saintfield scoring their fourth in the dying minutes to advance into the next round of the Intermediate cup. The Amateurs now need to put this result behind them and concentrate on their league campaign.
