Lock Lane bowed out of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup in the 5th round after a gritty display against superior opponents. Halifax were several yards a man faster, significantly fitter and far stronger than the plucky Castleford amateur side. Aside from an even showing in the first 10 minutes of each half Lane were chasing shadows. Former Lane junior Ben Johnston opened the Halifax account before tries at regular intervals saw the hosts 40-0 at the break. Early in the 2nd half, with the home side determined to nil the amateurs, Lane loose forward Karl Robinson - the only survivor from Lane's 2005 Challenge cup defeat at the Shay - used craft and power to burst over from close range to give the visiting support some cheer. A good local support of juniors, former players and neutrals tried to rally the Lane, with a small section of visiting Castleford Tigers fans out-singing the entire Halifax crowd. This was as good as it got for the visitors and the try procession continued throughout with Johnston finishing the scoring in the final minute. Halifax were excellent hosts and are a credit to the Kingstone Press Championship. Best for the Lane were captain Chris Siddons, fullback Mikey Hayward and centre Nicky Saxton who managed to keep his brother Tommy the 'Fax winger from scoring.
