With many players away on international duty (AKA half term holiday) only 9 Crazy Stars were available for this middle of the table 6 pointer against a solid Wolverines squad. So whilst the coach scratched his head thinking of a possible formation, the girls warmed up without a care in the world. With Maisie away skiing, part of the warm up saw Megan using her strong kick to practice taking corners, and to say it was her first ever attempt she made it look very easy lifting the ball consistently into the danger area :-) well done Megan.
So head scratching over, Ric went for a Mourinho style attacking 3-4-1 formation with Renee making her debut as loan striker, Grace, Freya and Ash were in defence, with Martha, Sian, Megan and Niamh forming the midfield, and Hans in goal.
The Crazy's kicked off and straight away were keeping good shape and putting together some nice passing moves in all departments and creating some good passes for Renee to run onto and attack the goal. With possibly their first attack of the match Woodkirk were awarded a free kick just outside our area, and with a 50-yard run up their tall and strong winger smashed the ball into our top corner, giving our quickly assembled wall or Hans no chance of saving it.
The Crazy's weren't disheartened being 1-0 down and for the remainder of the first half were in control. Freya was doing a great job as usual reading anything coming into central defence and clearing it straight back up field for Niamh to latch onto, and from one of these great moves it looked like we'd got the equaliser, only for the ball to clatter the bar and rebound to a Woodkirk player!!!!! Maybe it was going to be one of those days.
Grace was battling hard in defence but also taking time to choose her pass, and on a few occasions set Martha up down the right wing on her trademark attacking runs. The Woodkirk players couldn't cope with Martha's pace, as she skipped past them and played some great balls across the penalty area, but as much as the supporting Crazy's tried, they couldn't slot the ball home today. These attacks were leading to corners, and on any other day we would have got 3 own goals as Megan's fierce drives hit Woodkirk defenders and were heading into goal, only for it to hit another player and stay out.........doh!!! The Crazy's kept pressure on all the time from the goal kicks with Sian and Renee making a nuisance of themselves at every opportunity - great battling you two. Woodkirk were getting some possession down the right wing, but Ash had a stellar defensive performance and won every battle that came her way, and often turning defence into attack with great passes back down the wing for the midfielders to chase. 10/10 Ash :-)
So 1-0 at half time and the girls take a deserved rest and get a drink with everything still to play for.
If the first half was a great performance by the Crazy's, the second was even better, with the same rock solid defensive performance, some great build up play from Hans goal kicks (especially tricky in a very muddy penalty area), through defence and into midfield. Some fantastic passing by Sian, Niamh and Megan in midfield led to more attacks by Renee and Martha who formed a great partnership in the second half. This continued pressure led to more great corners from Megan, lots of goal mouth scrambles, but it just wasn't to be our day. With one of only a handful of attacks in the second half Woodkirk looped the ball over Hans to make it 2-0
With their usual great spirit, the Crazy's worked their hardest and were still attacking right until the final whistle, and whilst the result hadn't gone our way, everything else about the game was really really positive, and it was obvious the Crazy's had really enjoyed the game.
Every one of the 9 girls deserved coach’s player of the match, but Ash picked up the award for her defensive display and never be beaten battling attitude. Martha was awarded player of the match by Woodkirk.
