The 1st team welcomed a very good Brecon side to Cae Gof this afternoon as we looked for revenge after our cup defeat to them last month. With only 1 point separating the 2 teams a close game was to be expected.
We went with a very youthful midfield pairing with Kieran Davies and Ioan Clatworthy coming into the centre for their 1st starts for a while.
The game started very cagely. As expected Brecon were testing our defence out regularly with the long ball but were met with a very determined back line in TM, Tiff, Ross,Ben and the impressive Rhys Fisher in goal. We took a while to settle into the game. Our passing lacked the sharpness that we’d usually expect. There were glimmers of it during the 1st half but really not enough for my liking. We took the lead on 23 mins when some determined work by Ben Morgan beating 2 men and then passing up to Woolfy who cut inside his man and smashed the ball into the top corner from just outside the box. A real top drawer strike! That goal seemed to settle us down and we started to play. Tom has a shot well saved by the keeper and Woolfy came close again when his shot was deflected narrowly wide. With half time approaching Tom received the ball and took a shot that the keeper made a real hash of as the ball went through his legs and into the net. 2-0 half time.
We knew 2nd half they would come straight back at us as they really are a very good side imo. We weathered the storm well and again settled down quickly. Rhys pulled off a fantastic reaction save from Ross Hoopers intervention of a cross and from that moment we seemed to up the ante. Jinxy and Matty out wide were really starting to pose a threat and Woolfys tireless running was keeping them on there toes. We scored the vital 3rd goal with about 15 mins to go. Woolfy was played through, he did everything right in drawing the keeper out who then made a decent save but there was Jinxy to follow up on the rebound and make the game safe. Brecon were reduced to 10 men when 1 of there lads lost his head kicking out at Curtis and just to rub salt into the wound we went up the other end and Woolfy grabbed his 2nd of the day to complete the scoring. 4-0 full time.
Make no bones about it, this win today was the result of hunger, desire and a real will not to be beaten by a really good side. The work rate of our lads was exceptional and the performance even better. When you consider we had 7 players in our starting line up who are 21 or under I think that shows just how much potential this squad of players has.
