Y pipped at the post and finish second

Y pipped at the post and finish second

Perry Richardson18 Apr 2014 - 07:39

A big thank you to all those that played Saturday and Andy F for bringing 3 good players along and with Paul Ryan loaning us the Ex Blue’s keeper Alan we managed to turn out with 13.

That said it was touch and go till Saturday morning if we would even have 11 being a very difficult week with half term, injuries, under the thumbs and holidays. Personally relieved the week is over as it was pretty stressful sorting this one out.

On to the tournament. We drew Old Pastonians in the first game and managed to also avoid the fat controller referee, with 4 new players we would always be a little disjointed but started brightly enough creating good chances however the story of our past month has been taking them! Eventually we did break the deadlock and took a 1-0 nil (apologies can’t remember scorers, it was all an emotional blur..) only to be pegged back 1-1 quite quickly. We ran out 2-1 winners in the first match so making the final for the second year on the trot.

We had to face a solid but ageing Edenstone in the final and it was tetchy, tight, affair as both sides tired in the heat and we failed to again take anyone of a number of good chances. Sadly a defensive lapse (at our level they do happen..) saw Edenstone take a 1-0 lead which proved unassailable despite further very good chances for the Y.

Overall taking all things into account it was a great effort to make the final and run so close but it does feel like a huge opportunity to finally lift this trophy missed – I genuinely think another 2 decent players and we would have got over the line, Simon pulled up lame just before halftime in the final and a number of us were playing on empty after a hot day and for some 120+ minutes of football. But on this occasion it wasn’t to be.

Again thanks to those that made the effort and those that changed plans, found a player etc.

No game next weekend for Easter Weekend.
