Manager David Fish gives his thoughts ahead of this evening's Manchester Premier Cup clash with local rivals Avro.

Saturday was a huge disappointment. When we took the lead I thought we would kick-on and take control of the game.

Even when trailing at half time I still thought the game was ours for the taking, but in the second half we just didn’t get the ball down and play.

We tried too many long straight balls and left huge gaps between the midfield and forwards – meaning we didn’t win enough second balls and virtually none in dangerous areas of the pitch.

Whilst the result isn’t the worst we’ve had I do think the second half was our worst performance; especially when we had possession of the ball.

There won’t be many changes tonight, we still have a number of injuries and suspensions which mean that the group that played Saturday will have a chance to put things right.

Those same players outplayed Longridge a week earlier so there is no doubt the talent is there, but the application needs to be better.

I know Saturday hurt the players so I’m looking for them to channel that into a good performance tonight.

On the plus side I don’t think I could have picked a better game than tonight’s as an opportunity to bounce back.

We tend to perform better against better sides and this season Avro look like one of the best in our league.

They’ve adapted well to the step up from the Manchester league, adding a few experienced campaigners to the squad and have recorded some eye catching results.

Tonight is all set-up to be a cracker; local rivals, both of whom like to play football, under the lights in a cup game that can give the winner a lucrative and high profile draw.

Let’s hope it lives up to that and it’s us in the hat for the next round.

Enjoy the game,
