Report | Chadderton 3-2 St Helens Town

By

Chadderton earn first home win of the season!

Ryan Shenton’s double paved the way for Chadderton to secure their first home win of the 2018/19 season as the Reds fought off a late fightback to triumph 3-2 over a spirited St Helens Town outfit, on a nervy afternoon at the ARK Fleetech Stadium.

Alongside Shenton's brace, an own goal from second-half substitute Anthony Whelan completed a vital win for David Fish's side, despite the best efforts of Liam Diggle and Luke Webster.

Chadderton headed into the tie on the back of Saturday's narrow 1-0 defeat at Carlisle City; however, they flew out of the blocks this time around.

It took the hosts just four minutes to break the deadlock. Shenton’s chipped pass forced a footrace between James Dwyer and Town keeper Carl Williams, the latter was second best to the ball and clipped Dwyer’s right shin – resulting in the referee subsequently awarding a penalty.

The visitors responded however and would have levelled the scoring if it wasn’t for a stunning save from Chadderton’s Jordan Hadlow. First, the stopper got down well to his left to claw Liam Diggle’s header away from goal, before standing firm to block Sean Richards’ effort on the follow-up.

Jack Snape and Oumar Camara were both forced off early on through injury, but that didn’t stop the Reds.
Dillan O’Connor flicked inside to Dwyer, before collecting the return ball down the right-hand channel and drilling the ball across goal, to gift Shenton with the simple task of slotting home for his second.

O’Connor then had a glorious chance to claim a goal of his own, but he dragged his effort wide of the mark after Dwyer’s dummy helped forge the opening.

After the break, St Helens looked intent on clawing their way back into the contest, and they reduced the arrears 12 minutes into the half as Diggle latched onto Neil Weaver’s flicked pass, before rifling the ball low down to Hadlow’s right.

Chadderton controlled the majority of the second half and this pressure almost paid dividends 15 minutes from time. Sam Riley’s lofted free-kick found the head of Dwyer, but the forward’s effort drifted narrowly over Williams’ goal.

Dwyer was again involved in Chaddy’s next chance, but this time there was a positive outcome. The forward looked to slip through Shenton, but the ball ricocheted off Whelan and trickled past a deflated Williams to further increase the margin.

Shenton was inches away from clinching his treble minutes later, but it was the visitors who’d score next as Edwards nodded home from close-range to give Town a glimmer of hope, but Fish’s men fought off the late resurgence to secure three pivotal points.
