First half onslaught condemns Chadderton to defeat

Despite producing a creditable second-half fightback, Chadderton fell to a 4-3 defeat at the hands of ten-man Shelley in an entertaining affair at the ARK Fleetech Stadium on Tuesday Evening.

The efforts of Jordan Butterworth, Leon Iluobe and Ryan Shenton weren't sufficient for the hosts to salvage anything from the game as Craig Billington's double combined with further scores from Matty Waller and Emerson-Josh Bradshaw ensured the Yorkshire side secured maximum points.

After ending their two game losing streak at Bacup Borough four days prior, Chadderton headed into the tie in high spirits but unfortunately, they weren't capable of replicating a similar scoreline this time around.

The visitors capitalised on Chadderton's sluggish start to break the deadlock with just nine minutes on the clock; a spell of neat work in midfield saw the ball fall to Waller and the winger emphatically fired past Chaddy stopper Jordan Hadlow.

Unfortunately for the Reds, things went from bad to worse soon after. Three minutes after Waller's opener, a second duly followed. After spotting goalkeeper Hadlow well off his line, Shelley man Bradshaw cheekily tried his luck with a speculative looping effort from the half-way line.

Much to the amazement of the majority in attendance, the towering midfielder's strike sailed over a backtracking Hadlow to double Shelley's lead.

Despite ceding another setback, Chaddy responded in style and quickly clawed their way back into the tie when Jack Ward picked out Butterworth with a neat through ball, before the latter effortlessly stroked the ball to Max Dearnley’s left.

16 minutes after Butterworth’s effort, Chaddy were level. Forward Iluobe capitalised on a lapse in concentration from Shelley defender Liam Smith to steal the loose ball, before jinking his way past three defenders and rifling the ball into Dearnley’s bottom left.

Chadderton’s fightback was short-lived though, just seconds after Sheiden Rogers saw his effort fall narrowly wide of the mark, Isreal Johnson worked his way into the area before sliding the ball across to Billington who cushioned the ball into the empty goal.

The visitors weren’t finished there though. In what was almost carbon copy of his first strike, Billington again found himself unmarked inside the danger area and met Waller's in-swinging cross to nod beyond a stunned Hadlow.

Chaddy flew out of the blocks after the break and this intensity proved dividends less than five minutes into the second period, when stand-in captain Shenton kickstarted the Reds' fightback.

After linking up with Iluobe down the right-hand side, midfielder Shenton - who scored in last week's 1-2 win at Bacup - collected the return pass from the forward before steering the ball across Dearnley to notch his fifth goal this season.

Manager David Fish opted to shift Iluobe to more of a central role during the half and the move almost proved an inspired one when the forward came inches away from carving out an equaliser.

After sidestepping past captain Antony Leech's challenge, Iluobe's curling effort looked destined for the bottom right-hand corner, but James Bootland had other ideas and managed to fling a leg at the strike before desperately clearing his lines.

Although Chadderton dominated the early stages, it was the visitors who’d forge the next opening. Billington span on the turn before striking towards Hadlow’s goal, but the ball rebounded off the crossbar – much to the relief of the Chadderton contingent.

Fish's side were handed a potential lifeline inside injury time when Dillan O'Connor looked to release the onrushing Iluobe with a well-weighted lofted pass. Shelley stopper Dearnley immediately spotted the danger and rushed out to meet the ball but handled outside his area, leaving referee Abid Hussain with no choice but to show the goalkeeper the red card.

Butterworth was unable to emulate his earlier effort and capitalise from the subsequent free-kick, his curling effort deflected off the wall and out for a corner, before Hussain quickly sounded the full-time whistle to send the travelling supporters into raptures.
