What a start to the New Year

Chelmsford inflict first defeat on league leaders
Having suffered defeat in the cup at the hands of Wanstead/Chingford, this was the chance to give a better account of themselves against the league leaders. Chelmsford showed steely determination from the start and knew the way to get the better of the bigger opposition players was to go low and double up if necessary. After some initial defending in their half, Chelmsford progressed up the field, and Josh D scored and converted the opening try. Connor C soon added another, and the Wanstead/Chingford full back, Tom Head, was injured in the build up to the try. This lead to a long delay as he received treatment and thankfully was able to walk to the sidelines. This was the same player who only 12 months ago broke his back, so it was good to see him back on the pitch in the second half. Josh D converted to make it 14-0 to Chelmsford. Wanstead/Chingford were able to open their scoring account with a well worked break, to make it 7-14 at half time.
Chelmsford continued their strong form into the second half, and were able to dominate the scrum and were the more controlling side. Josh D scored a second try in the the right hand corner, leaving a tricky conversion chance, which was missed. This made it 7-19, and the gap was stretched with a fourth try, duly converted by Josh D. Chelmsford added a fourth try, converted by Josh D and Wanstead/Chingford added a second try, but left themselves a difficult conversion which was missed.
Chelmsford held out and prevented the opposition making much progression towards the try line, and the match ended 26-12 to Chelmsford. This was a fantastic performance by all the players, and it leaves the man of the match vote a very difficult choice!
