Solid Cheltenham performance ensures another win in the bag

Cricklade visited the Victoria ground for the return fixture in the league, both teams with 9 players. Having won their previous encounter Cheltenham were full of optimism as captain Olivia won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry wicket. She and Grace went about their work effectively, putting on 74 for the first wicket as Olivia led from the front and plundered 10 boundaries in her attacking innings. Grace played nicely for a run-a-ball 14 before being unfortunately bowled off her pads chasing a wide leg-side delivery in the 8th over. Hannah and Liv added 6 more runs when Liv was caught behind 5 shy of another half century (45 from 31 deliveries). Hannah and Pippa put on a partnership of 15 for the 3rd wicket as we approached 3 figures. Hannah was bowled for 12 which sparked a mini collapse. Pippa fell in the next over for 2 and then Helen in the following over also for 2. 101 for 5 with still 5 overs to bat. Lily and Sophie stood firm however to ensure we saw out our 20 overs, finishing on 115 for 5 (Lily not out 4, Sophie not out 6). Another great innings from Liv which set the tone for Cheltenham, great support from the other batters (and some help from wides) with solid batting at the end of the innings to ensure we had a really decent total to defend.

Hannah opened the bowling, conceding 10 from the first over as Cricklade showed they were not going to make it easy for us. Pippa supported Hannah but despite bowling with control couldn't find the breakthrough. Liv brought herself on for an over and then in a masterstroke of captaincy brought Hannah back into attack for the 7th over (Cricklade 30 without loss after 6 and going nicely). Hannah turned the match firmly back in Cheltenham's favour; firstly bowling the no2 for 7, then Pippa taking a good catch to dismiss the no3 for a duck and finally Hannah bowling the no4 for a duck (unfortunately not all consecutive deliveries) and Cricklade were suddenly 31 for 3 from 7. Liv returned from the other end and bowled their captain (no5) for 0 and we were half way through the batters. Sophie bowled nicely without reward and Lily bowled a brilliant spell of 2-0-3-1 which included the wicket of the no6, well caught by Helen for 1. All this time the opener continued to attack and Liv brought Grace on to see if she could get the key wicket. It didn't quite go to plan in her first over which went for 11 (not helped by 4 overthrows, or "buzzers") but she got the breakthrough in in her second over, trapping the opener plum in front, LBW for a well made 38. Annie-May bagged herself a wicket in the next over courtesy of a nice catch by Liv and then Diana (whose fielding by the way had been exceptional all innings) wrapped things up by bowling the no8 for a duck. Cricklade all out for 81 in 17 overs and Cheltenham win by 34 runs.

Barring the buzzers, I think this was the best fielding I have seen. The batting was a mature mix of attack and defence and the bowling back to the standard we have come to expect (although we still need to work on reducing those extras). A very enjoyable game against a very friendly opposition. Well played everyone.
