Half back Chris Pape popped over a last gasp drop goal as Chester snatched a thrilling win at Old Bedians RUFC.

Gladiators were without the experienced trio of Dan Rowett, Declan Foy and Simon Quinn but produced a gutsy performance to beat Mancunians for the second week running.

Kiwi prop Kellum Friday made his first appearances of the season with Terry Toland, Lee Thomas, Mark Thomas, Lewis Hibbert and Will Benson returning to the side.

Facing a much-changed Mancunians, the visitors started well and took an early two point lead when Mark Kingsley knocked over a penalty.

Winger Mark Thomas' fine catch resulted in Chester scoring the opening try of the game although Kingsley was unable to add the extras.

Both sides produced some solid defence but Gladiators' resistance was broken on the stroke of half time when Dave Burr touched down in the corner to pull the hosts to within two points.

It took until 65 minutes for the next points to arrived and Mancunians drew level with a Luke Turner penalty to set up an exciting end to the tie.

Chester went close to scoring on a couple of occasions and the home side had opportunities too but neither side was able to find the breakthrough.

With time running out, both sides looked to work an opening for a drop goal and it was the hosts who had the first attempt but Turner's effort was blocked.

Chester charged up the other end of the field and Pape dropped into the pocket before sending the ball sailing between the posts with seconds left on the clock.

Gladiators are back in league action on Saturday when Blackpool Scorpions visit The Cheshire County Sports Club (2.30pm).
