Chester Gladiators moved up to second place in the RL Merit League sponsored by Kukri Sports table following an emphatic 54-0 victory over Wolverhampton Warlords at Hare Lane.
The Gladiators had been due to face Sheffield Forgers but the Yorkshire outfit pulled out of the fixture midweek, meaning the clubs proposed A team fixture against Wolverhampton became a first team match.
With work commitments and injuries depriving the Gladiators of a number of key players it was a side containing a number of inexperienced players that took to the field. Chester got off to the perfect start when diminutive winger David Beddows dived over the line in the 4th minute, following a length of the field run from fullback Simon Quinn.
Chester extended their lead in the 18th minute when Brad Pryjmachuk crossed the whitewash and Pryjmachuk added another try after 31 minutes following a neat passing move across the Gladiators back line.
Alexis Wilkie continued his impressive start to the season as he charged over the line after 35 minutes and captain Martin Cormack added a further score a minute before the interval, sending the Gladiators into the break 24-0 in front.
Any hopes the visitors had of mounting a second half comeback were quickly squashed as Adam Pierpoint showed blistering speed to burst clear and touch down less than a minute after the restart. Rob Massam heaped further misery on the Warlords a minute later as he weaved his way through the Wolverhampton defence to claim a try on his debut.
The Warlords regrouped and temporarily stemmed the tide before prop forward Jim Green claimed his first try of the season after 65 minutes and Andy Vaughan added another try five minutes later, following a looping pass from Dan Tyers.
Chester were showing plenty of intelligence in attack but it was the Gladiators defensive effort that really stood out as they penned the Warlords into their half for the majority of the second period.
David Beddows took advantage of some tired Warlords defence in the 73rd minute to claim his second try of the day and the victory was wrapped up in the final minute as Sam Martin raced clear to mark his debut with a try.
“The coaching team are delighted with the result and the performance,†said club Chairman Jim Green.
“To keep our opponents scoreless took a huge amount of effort and the players deserve a pat on the back. We've picked up some good wins in recent weeks and
Chester captain Cormack was named man of the match whilst Pryjmachuk and Massam also impressed. Next up for Chester is a home game against North Derbyshire Chargers on Sunday 14th June. The match is due to kick-off at 2.30 PM and will take place at Hare Lane, home of Chester RUFC.
