Further tries from Jim Green, Dan Harvey, Paul Foster, Sam Lee and Harry Broadbent ensured that the Gladiators claimed their third successive victory to remain at the top of the table.
The visitors started the game in determined style with some hard hitting defence but it was Chester who struck first when stand-in hooker Green forced his way over for the game's opening try.
Rochdale responded with a try of their own before the Gladiators seized control of the match with four unanswered tries. Fullback Dan Harvey raced 60 metres after finding a gap in the Cobras defence before the England Lionhearts international Massam scored a blistering hat-trick in the space of just 15 minutes.
The visitors regrouped and took advantage of some slack defence by the home side to score two tries in the last five minutes of the first half.
A further Rochdale try at the start of the second period reduced Chester's lead to just six points but the hosts rallied and regained control with tries from the impressive Lee, Foster and another for Massam.
Rochdale cut the lead to 18 points with a try of their own but it was Chester who had the last word with Massam adding two more to his tally either side of a fine solo try by Harry Broadbent.
