Two tries from Sam Broadbent and a Dan Rowett effort ensured that Chester got their campaign off to a winning start.
Both sides started the game in determined fashion but neither team was able to break the deadlock during the opening 15 minutes.
However, the Gladiators eventually opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Broadbent went over from close range. Fullback Danny Harvey successfully landed the conversion.
Chester were unable to extend their lead despite enjoying most of the possession and some poor discipline helped Crewe & Nantwich back into the game.
The hosts forced their way over for a converted try on 31 minutes to send the teams into the break tied up at 6-6.
The Gladiators regained the lead shortly after the restart when hooker Dan Rowett burrowed his way over from close range for a debut try with Harvey again adding the extras.
Some resolute defence preserved Chester's lead before Broadbent crossed for his second try of the game to extend the advantage. Harvey's conversion putting the Gladiators 18-6 in front.
However, the hosts refuse to give up and were given a boost when Chester's Chris Pape was sent to the sinbin after an altercation with an opponent.
The Gladiators defence was finally breached with seven minutes remaining as Crewe & Nantwich sensed a comeback. But Chester's commitment in defence saw them hold on to seal the win.
