Due to the current situation our club’s AGM is postponed until further notice. We are hopeful that rugby will resume in July which will enable Chew Valley and other clubs to return to training and plan for the 2020-21 season.
With this in mind, we have felt that the election of team captains and coaches for the 2020-21 season should go ahead to enable preparations and planning to be put in place. This has been done through consultation with our Director of Rugby (DOR), last year’s captains and senior players and will be ratified at our AGM, whenever that is rescheduled.
We find ourselves in very uncertain times with Covid-19 having a devastating effect on so many families and businesses, and we must remind ourselves that while rugby is just a game, we are a community and we need to be following the guidelines to protect all of those in it. It is a game we love and a game we will play again, but only when the time is right.
We will definitely have an AGM before the next season commences, where we will need to elect a new committee, but most importantly celebrate all the successes of the 2019-20 season.
Due to the current situation, I have asked the committee for special permission to announce the coaching staff, vice-captains and captains for the 2020-21 season so we are in the best possible position to resume playing once the RFU give us the green light.
As a result, I would like to confirm the following:
Head Coach (men) Steve Worrall
Forwards Coach (men) Dean Brooker
2nd Team Coach Lee Smith
Head Coaches (Cats) Helen Siwek & Andy Lyon
Club Physio Jo Nissenbaum
1st Captain Dan Gatton
1st Vice-captain Jack Monk
2nd Captain Silas Cox
2nd Vice-Captain James Stone
3rd Captain Grant Wedlake
3rd Vice-captain Dom Ford
1st Captain Cats Georgina Bessell
1st Vice-captain Amie Evans
You will see that both Charles Shallcross and Alex Cox have decided to step down next season and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for the past 4 seasons. Especially Alex, who has guided the club into 2 play-off finals and gained promotion into South West 1. As stated, we will have an AGM before the start of the new season, so we can celebrate the awards and allow the captains to deliver their speeches.
I am sure you will join me in congratulating all of those above – with a beer shortly.
As a club we are strong; we are one club, not one team, together we will get through this and come out the other side raring and ready to go.
Shane Cameron and Bruce Wellman.
