In 1999 Lydney played a Saracens team that included Francois Peinaar World Cup wining captain of the Springboks.

Lydney 17 Chew Valley 20
A little piece of history with a first win at Regentsholm for Chew Valley in a game that lacked the quality the surroundings and history of this ground deserved.
Lydney started brightly with a try by scrum.half after 2 minutes converted by outside half Joe Hamblin with the visitors hitting back with No 8 Daniel Brooker crossing 3 minutes later. Fullback Zach Kavanagh converted. The lineout proved productive for the Severnsiders all day, with slick ball centre Tom Carbut crossed. Hamblin missed the extras. Joe Cowell his opposite number hit back on 14 minutes but the kick went side.
Scrum half Jack Summers went to the bin on 29 minutes for an innocuous offside which gave Lydney the opportunity to put winger Mike Ctossman in at the corner. With the conversion missed that was it on the scoring for the hosts.
The Chew Valley pack had the ascendancy in the tight with veteran prop Jonny Eves putting in a monster shift due to an injury to fellow front rower Dean Brooker but their normal flowing game was hampered by slow ball from the breakdown.
A Kavanagh penalty made it a two point game at halftime.
An error strewn second half meant the crowd did not see much rugby. Chew Valley survived an early scare when a Lydney drive was held up over the line The decisive score came after flanker Ryan Stephens was binned on 55 minutes. A scrum five saw the hosts marched back over the line for Daniel Brooker to collect his second.
. With the conversion missed a penalty miss by Hamblin close to the posts proved crucial. The Chew Valley backs were guilty of butchering scoring opportunities late in the half when three on two overlaps were wasted on three occasions so no bonus point The whole pack can take pride in a battling performance. They sat good sides win when they are playing badly. Let's hope so!
