Positive tackling and rucking wins day

...It’s been a long long tour! We have not been back to the Chew Valley since September 28th.
The last leg of our ‘on the road’ tour, another visit back to Midsomer Norton RFC. The format of the day, three matches of 15 minutes each. As with previous weekends we were keen to mix the teams up and try new combinations, with each team picked of equal strength.
Match 1 It was clear to see that MSN were out to prove a point from being beaten a few weeks earlier in their own tournament and started the brighter side they were quickly rewarded with a try in the first few minutes. Chew responded well, and from that point were forceful in the tackle and began to totally out ruck and out maul MSN (Louis, Jack and Ollie being particularly effective). In so doing they kept 90% of the possession for the rest of the match scoring 3 well worked tries.
Match 2 A few changes in personnel and Chew were off again, bringing the intensity from the first game straight into the second. Chew’s defence is fast becoming a real strength and so often snaffled out any MSN attack. Constantly turning ball over at the ruck and holding the ball up in maul up. With ball in hand and when running from deep Chew scored some great tries. Not sure what the final score was approx. 4-1!
Match 3 More changes and on our way into the last match. Not sure what happened in this game, but there was no desire to tackle or compete at the breakdown, and as a result MSN scored two or three very soft tries. As the match went on Chew got better but could not match the levels they reached in the first two games.
Overall it was a great morning of rugby and all the games were close and well contested, MSN are a good side for us to play and if they learn to channel their aggression and understand the laws around the breakdown they will be a very difficult team to beat…Back Home this weekend, and some training!
