For their second warm up match of the season Chew Colts visited North Bristol whose Colts have a good pedigree having performed well in the League last year.
While Chew exerted some early pressure with strong tackling, they soon lost their way and were found by the referee to regularly infringe, which robbed them of momentum. North Bristol capitalised on Chew's indiscipline and were first to cross the try line after 8 minutes. As the first half progressed, Chew found their rhythm and scored a series of tries through forwards and backs to lead 31 v 8 at the mid-way point.
Chew maintained the upper hand in the second half and worthy of note was some excellent work at the breakdown by Jacob Dufour Battle turning over possession on a number occasions and Malakai Thompson joined in this with a lovely steal of his own. It was great to see Arthur Heard back in a Chew shirt after a significant injury kept him out last season and we saw some of his trademark breaks and good distribution. Three more tries followed in the second half enabling Chew to run out 50 v 8 victors. Nevertheless, North Bristol fought hard to the end in spite of losing 2 props leading to non contested scrums, in which department they at least equalled Chew while scrums were contested.
All in all, a second pleasing performance leaving Chew Colts ready for their first League fixture versus Clevedon on Friday 15 September at Lobbingtons.
