Minehead 10 Chew Valley Cats 43
Travelling to Minehead with the bare minimum fifteen meant that every player had to put in a full shift against the hosts with 6 replacements. Both teams are at the same stage of development and each would have benefited from a hard fought battle. Chew Valley put the lessons on defence from Paul Hull last Thursday into effect and learned that a strong defensive performance can often be the platform to go on and win games.
Minehead scored first out wide as the ball was spilled from the kickoff and flanker Rachael Perkins was on hand to gather a bouncing ball and cross. As early nerves on both sides eased, the Cats were into their stride and scrum half Rihanna Williams scored in the corner from the base of a scrum 15 metres out.
The scrum proved a solid platform all afternoon and hooker Becca Hodson was able to take several against the head despite the home eight being heavier.
Hannah Pearce made good yards to create the second try although she mistook the 5 metre line for the try line to dot down early. Her blushes were spared when winger Keely Avery was on hand to gather and cross for a try to put the Cats into a lead they would not relinquish.
Ultimately the difference between the two sides was the ability of the Cats to put the ball through several phases and to maintain their attacking and defensive shape better than Minehead who tended to be guilty of following the ball. Anico Heredii playing at No 8 popped up in midfield to score a try and give Daisy Pearce Lyons at outside half, the first of 4 conversions.
After a half time chat Minehead came out with greater control and structure to their game and a second try from Perkins resulted as the Cats conceded a penalty that was quickly taken leading to the try aided by some powder puff tackling. Fortunately this was a temporary lapse and tries from Williams, Lucy Stone at flanker followed as the Cats took control. The final try and Champagne moment went to inside centre Rachael Lyons. The ball went through a number of phases off a lineout and was then spun wide up the hill where Lyons spotted a gap and with a hint of a dummy pass she cut back against the grain to score under the posts.
Next Sunday sees the return fixture against Aretians who will be looking to overturn their defeat earlier in the season at Lobbingtons.
