The UK’s Parliamentary Rugby League Group has welcomed Chicago Stockyarders as its first international club member.

The Chicago Stockyarders have become an Associate Member of the Parliamentary Group, joining clubs at all levels in the UK as well as other organisations and individuals. Like all Associate Members, the American club shares the Group’s singular remit “to support the sport of rugby league football” and agrees to the Group’s constitution.

As an Associate Member, the club may take part in the Group’s monthly meetings in the UK Houses of Parliament and attend the Group’s Annual Dinner the upper Chamber, the House of Lords.

The announcement was made by the Group’s Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland at the Group's meeting on 27 January. Welcoming the Stockyarders to the Group, he said “in American terms, it’s awesome that the Stockyarders have joined the Parliamentary Rugby League Group as our first international club Associate Member. They are most welcome and I and other Members of Parliament are very much looking forward to hearing their thoughts.”

Stockyarders Director Alex Mitchell presented the Group with a shirt, saying “we’re very pleased to become an Associate Member of the UK Parliamentary Rugby League Group, and honoured to become its first international club member.

"I’ve been involved with the Group for a few years and recognise the important work that it does in the UK. The growth of the game internationally is something we see as very important and from players at junior to international level, we want to do all we can. Joining this group of passionate decision-makers is part of that development.”

Adding to these remarks, Stockyarders Chairman Michael Featherstone said “the Stockyarders have been at the forefront of rugby league development here in the US Midwest. Our new association with the Parliamentary Rugby League Group is an exciting step on our journey and we’re looking forward to working with such a key organisation from Rugby League’s homeland."
