We arrived on a bright, sunny day to a very different temperature to the last time we visited Saracens when it was below 0 degrees!
We were due to play three games, 12 minutes each with no half time. Under the format of the festival scores did not actually count. Instead each time was rated on Honesty, Work Rate, Energy and Side Line Culture. The top 2 in the pool would be invited back for the main festival in April and the bottom 2 to a plate competition in February.
Vs Tunbridge Wells 1 3-4
Our first game was against Tunbridge Wells 1. We started strongly racing into an early 3-1 lead and looked comfortably the better team. Then suddenly the boys went to sleep and stopped playing. We let Tunbridge back into the game with some static play in defence and let them run at us. We never got the momentum back and conceded a try late on to lose the match.
Vs Finchley 1 5-0
We worked hard before the game on improving our tackling and saw the benefit early on. In truth this was a very one-sided game and Finchley never got close to threatening our try line. Our tackling was a huge improvement on the previous game and the boys confidence grew as the game went on. The referee apologised afterwards that he had to be biased against us to try to even the game up a bit.
Vs Barnet Elizabethans 1 4-1
Again we worked on tackling before the game and saw another huge improvement on the previous game. BE were our strongest opponents on the day but we tackled them to a standstill. We eventually conceded a try in the dying seconds but had completely dominated this game.
The whole squad had played a part and working out who to substitute was probably the most difficult decision of the day.
We then got to watch Saracens play Scarlets in the Champions Cup to round off a great day out for Chichester.
We received the results this morning and have qualified for the main event in April. Well done to the boys for qualifying and thank you to the parents for the long round trip on the day.
