Ladie unlucky in cup final.

Thursday the 12th of March saw Chichester city ladies take on Brighton ladies in a repeat of the Sussex Challenge cup final of last season. With several injuries to key players Chichester knew they had a tough job on their hands to retain the trophy they won the previous season against a side looking for promotion into the Women's Super League. Brighton started quickly forcing an early corner which was headed over the bar and shortly after creating a shooting chance from the edge of the area however the strike was placed harmlessly wide.

Although Brighton were enjoying large amounts of the early possession Chichester looked dangerous on the counter attack and looked as though they may take the lead when Ambler was sent clear only for her pass to Waller to be cut out. Waller was once again played through by Ambler shortly after this chance but her effort was blocked by the chasing defender. Brighton then took the lead, after some slick build up play the ball found it's way to a Brighton midfielder on the edge of the Chichester area where she unleashed a pile driver of a strike which left Piiroinen with no chance. This did little to settle the East Sussex side as Chichester continued to create chances, after a superbly weighted delivery into the box from a deep free kick the ball was headed goal wards only for a combination of two Brighton defenders to clear from the line.

Chichester's first corner of the game created an opportunity to score however McGlashan was unable to direct her header towards goal with any power and Ambler's follow up shot sailed over the crossbar. Brighton were enjoying large amounts of possession but not really threatening the Chichester goal due to their good organisation. At half time Chichester knew they would have to continue their fantastic levels of concentration and hard work of they were to stand a chance of retaining the cup. Brighton created a succession of chances early on in the second half but thanks to a combination of tenacious defending and good goalkeeping the match stayed at 1-0. With Brighton in the ascendancy they continued to force corners and it was with one of these they scored their second goal. A delivery to the back post caught everyone off guard and despite Piiroinen swimmingly having the ball in her hands the ball was bundled into the back of the net.

Probably not the prettiest goal Brighton will score this season but certainly an important one in this game. Once again the goal seemed to spur Chichester on and they had several chances from distance but failed to get any of them on target. Late in the game Chichester sent Cheshire forward from the back and her link up play with Ambler and tireless running was causing problems for Brighton's back line. Chichester were now looking the more dominant side but were struggling to create clear cut chances.

Chichester continued to create chances until the final whistle but were unable to score meaning Brighton regained the title. Chichester City ladies return to league action at Oaklands park against Larkhall this Sunday KO 14.00
