At the time of writing, it seems increasingly likely that the club will remain under Tier 2 restrictions throughout the Christmas period and, as I have outlined previously, these restrictions limit how we can operate the Clubhouse as well as restrict how and when we can serve alcohol to members.

The club’s Management Group and Directors have considered the impact of the Tier 2 restrictions on our ability to safely host the normal festive traditions which we enjoy at Allington Fields. In particular, we assessed whether it will be possible for us to stage the traditional inter club game of rugby held each Boxing Day.

We have considered various factors, such as the impact of the Tier 2 restrictions on how the club can operate, the large number of spectators who attend the game, the club’s reduced capacity, ongoing social distancing rules and the current RFU restrictions on how the game itself can be played. After careful deliberation, the club’s Management Group and Board have reluctantly concluded that it will not possible for us to stage a Covid safe event on Boxing Day this year. As a result, the Clubhouse and grounds will be closed from Monday 21st December and will reopen on Monday January 4th.

I appreciate that this will be disappointing news for many of our members but I am sure you will understand that this decision has only been made after careful thought and with due consideration for the best interests of our staff, players and club members. It would appear that we are gradually moving towards a point when restrictions can be lifted across society but, until that time, we must continue to act responsibly for the safety of everyone connected with the club and our local community.

The club will look at ways in which to make Boxing Day 2021 a particularly memorable event for our members to make up for this year’s disappointment so suggestions and ideas from members for next year’s event will be very welcome.
