RFU announcement on Adult rugby league competitions 2020/21 season

Dear Members,

Adult rugby league competitions 2020/21 season

I am writing to let you know that the Rugby Football Union (RFU) announced yesterday that, in order to provide some certainty to amateur rugby clubs, the adult competition leagues have been cancelled for the 2020/21 season.

Although 15 a side adult leagues have been cancelled, discussions between the RFU and Government are ongoing with a view to allowing an adapted form of rugby to be played.

Yesterday’s announcement applies solely to adult rugby league competitions and amateur rugby in general, for all age groups, remains at level D of the Return to Community Rugby roadmap protocols which has now been in place for several weeks.

Although this news will be disappointing for our players who were looking forward to a return to league fixtures this season, we are of course keen for our members to return to playing rugby in whatever format is permissible. In the meantime, our coaches will continue to work hard to ensure training sessions are as innovative and enjoyable as possible across every section and age group.

The clubs board are meeting on Tuesday to discuss the implications of this decision on the club and I will follow the meeting with a further note to you all on what steps the board are going to consider to secure the clubs future over the next 6 – 12 months.

It goes without saying that this is an extremely challenging time for our club, the sport of rugby and the wider community and so your support for the club is vital to help us get through this difficult period.

We will continue to keep you fully informed of developments and thank you for your continued support.

Ian Banister
Chairman
Chippenham RFC
