Chippenham RFC took on league leaders Newbury on a lovely sunny day in front of a good crowd at Allington Fields.

Unfortunately for the home team, they came off second best to a very capable team. The home team had 1st XV debuts for 2nd rower Elliott Berryman and centre Josh Barratt. Both players have tremendous talent and will add a great deal to the team this season.

The visitors got off to an excellent start scoring early on in the corner but with the conversion hitting the post, the score was 0-5 to the Blues. Chip managed to regain their composure and launch numerous attacks of their own with Charlie QE and Jake Unwin - captain on the day! - very prominent. Unfortunately for CQE, he injured his ankle and had to be replaced by Ben Hathaway after only 20 mins.

The home team played some very expansive rugby, pushing Newbury all the way, and, but for the final pass and some individual errors, the score could have been very different. Young Berryman and prop Will French showed some excellent touches when carrying the ball and No 8 Charlie Palmer was outstanding.

Newbury managed to take advantage of some sloppy defence from Chippenham and scored a further 4 before the hone team could get points on the board. Some lovely handling from Fogerty and Unwin to release Ayliffe for the first home try. Newbury go on to score another before half time taking the score to 5-29 in favour of the visitors. Chippenham had plenty of chances but needed to be more clinical and patient in attack.

Ben Riley replaced Lewis Tyler at half time and straight away managed to make an impact. Alongside Ed Hendy and Gareth Angel, the 3 of them seemed to be everywhere. Whilst Chippenham continued to attack, Newbury’s well organised defence held together well until Ben Hathaway made a lovely break and put Ayliffe away for his second try. Score now at 10-31 in favour of the visitors.

Newbury came back at Chippenham very strongly and the home team team put in a good defensive display until a slipped tackle which allowed the Blues to score.

Chippenham never lost heart though, they regrouped again showing great spirit and courage. With Ayliffe off injured, Oli Alcorn manages to break tackles at will to score an excellent try - he also converts very quickly as they are chasing the try bonus point.

The home team again showed their youthful potential and the learning curve they’re going through this season, however, sadly on the day, Chippenham were unable to break down Newbury who proved why they are top of the table.
