Chippenham 'A' bring high flying Bassett crashing down to earth in 6-1 thrashing
By Mark Knight
A right Royal thrashing!
Chippenham A hosted top of the table Royal Wooton Bassett this week, in a top of the table clash.
The match started at a frenetic pace, with Bassett showing their pace across the park in the early exchanges.
This, however, was matched by the Chippenham midfield who dominated the match with superb debut performances from Dave Thomas, Charlie Bizley and Andy Edwards. Chippenham remained disciplined and maintained their shape and composure, repelling any foree into their D by the Bassett attack throughout the match.
Chippenham keeper Harry Wells, almost acting as a 4th defender, dominated his goal area/D and snuffed out any chance for the Bassett forwards who were prevented from reaching the Chippenham D by the defence.
Chippenham opened the scoring within minutes of the start of the match with Nigel Stonham earning Chippenham an early penalty corner.
This was dispatched in a slick routine, when Stonham fired the ball goal-bound to an on-rushing Charlie Bizley to deflect the ball into the back of the Bassett goal. 1-0.
Chippenham’s second goal came from a penalty stroke after a poor challenge by the Bassett defence in their own D. This was fired into the top left corner of the goal by Stonham. 2-0 which remained the scoreline until half-time.
Chippenham’s 3rd goal came from a deflected ball towards the waiting Bizley to deflect it around the flailing Bassett keeper into the back of the net. 3-0 to Chippenham.
Bassett never gave up, and constantly probed the Chippenham defence with their pace through their midfield and forward line. Attack after attack was soaked up and repelled by the Chippenham defence and midfield, counter attacking at pace. Every question Bassett asked, Chippenham had the answer - Craig Stewart, supreme at the centre of the Chippenham defence.
Bassett eventually won a penalty corner which they scored from with a well worked routine, deflecting the ball over keeper Harry Wells. 3-1.
Chippenham, however, were unrelenting in their pressure on the Bassett defence, with end to end hockey producing counter attack after counter attack.
Midfielders Dave Thomas and Andy Edwards controlled the match from the centre of the park, culminating in Thomas slapping the ball goal bound from the top of the Bassett D, with Stonham ensuring the ball was slammed across the goal-line to make the scoreline 4-1.
Chippenham’s 5th goal came from a ball blasted into the Bassett D and deftly deflected past the keeper into the corner of the Bassett goal by Andy Edwards.
Bizley then topped off a brilliant personal and team performance and added to his tally with a further goal to make his hatrick and the scoreline 6-1 to Chippenham which remained the score until the end of the match, and leaving this strong Bassett team completely deflated and scratching their heads as to what had just happened to them.
Bassett must surely have entered the match feeling confident having comprehensively beaten their opposition in their previous 3 opening matches of the season - however Chippenham proved to be better drilled, better organised, better structured, better finishers, better in all areas....... simply the better team!!!
This result moves Chippenham A top of the table
