Chippenham do the double over Weston
Chippenham A travelled to the coast to play Weston Super Mare this week.
Chippenham started brightly in an evenly fought contest, and went 1-0 up when Nigel Stonham converted a penalty corner with a drag flick after about 10 minutes of the match.
The away side needed to be wary of the well drilled, skilful and rapid WSM midfield and forward line who broke at pace and ensured the Chippenham defence had to stay alert.
Chippenham went 2-0 up when Stonham fired the ball into the WSM D, which was deflected into the goal by Archie Wright leaving the WSM keeper no chance.
Chippenham stepped off the gas then and lost their concentration, failing to track WSM players as they broke twice in quick succession, and overloaded the Chippenham defence to calmly move the ball around Chippenham keeper Howard Simons who was left unprotected and the ball was tucked into an unguarded goal 2-2.
Chippenham regained the lead just before half time with another drag flick from Stonham from another penalty corner. 3-2 to Chippenham at the break.
WSM had caused the Chippenham team a lot of problems and had had more and better chances to score during the first half, but failed to capitalise on the chances they created.
WSM started brighter in the second half and brought the scoreline level again, when they fired home from a broken down penalty corner, despite a valiant effort from defender Anuj Patel, which ultimately failed to prevent the goal. 3-3.
In the last 20 minutes of the match, Chippenham took control and largely dominated the remainder of the match, particularly the midfield battle with David Thomas and Nigel Stonham proving instrumental in this, with Chippenham adding goals from Craig Kilminster and Henry Price to make the final score 5-3 to Chippenham.
The scoreline could very much have been different with missed opportunities from both sides, but Chippenham prevailed and the result takes them clear in second place in the division, with results elsewhere going in their favour.
