5 star Stonham fires Chippenham to victory
Chippenham A entertained North Wilts this week, looking to maintain their winning form and stay in second place promotion slot.
Chippenham started at a blistering pace and won an early penalty corner - this was dispatched by captain Darren Bean who rifled the ball home beneath the diving Wilts keeper. 1-0 to Chippenham.
This was quickly followed by the goal of the match and possibly the season so far ... Craig Kilminster won the ball on the half way line. He then expertly drilled the ball straight into the Wilts D into the path of Chris Instone who took the ball on the run, deflecting it first time into the top left corner of the net sending it whistling past the Wilts keeper who was left standing rooted to the spot.
2-0 to Chippenham with a little more than 7 minutes played.
Chippenham then ‘eased off the gas’ as North Wilts reverted to a half court press, allowing the visitors to regain their composure and structure. Little mistakes then crept in to the Chippenham team as their intensity eased.
North Wilts grew in confidence and their strong midfield threatened the Chippenham team at times. This led to a goal from the visitors, hitting Chippenham on the break.
Chippenham then re-gained their 2 goal lead with another penalty corner. The initial shot saved, it was then dispatched at short range by Dewi Evans. 3-1 to Chippenham which remained the score until half time.
A reinvigorated Chippenham team stepped up their intensity in the second half, and eliminated their mistakes to take control of the match once and for all.
The second half saw a further 7 goals from the home side as they reinforced their dominance in the match.
Constant pressure on the Wilts defence saw a number of penalty corners won - Nigel Stonham then showed his prowess in front of goal, with a variety of shots, flicks, drag flicks to score 5 of the 7 further Chippenham goals.
The two further goals scored from a well worked penalty corner with Elliot Jones deflecting the ball into the roof of the net and returning striker Henry Price flicking the ball home from a broken down penalty corner.
The final score 10-1 to Chippenham, a resounding victory leaving the beleaguered North Wilts team reeling, deflated and totally demolished in their heaviest defeat of the season by far!
Chippenham remain in second place, 5 points clear of third place Mendip with 2 matches to play.
