A credible result and useful workout for the Bluebirds in their opening friendly against their League Two visitors at a sun-drenched Hardenhuish Park.
Newport brought most of their first team squad and played two different outfield sides in each half, and for their part Chippenham also used twenty players over the course of the match.
Newport played a stronger team in the first half and created the majority of the chances but the Bluebirds threatened the Welsh side’s goal on more than one occasion.
In fact Chippenham were the first to show on seven minutes when Karnell Chambers low cross saw Joe Day forced to dive on the ball. Newport’s Tyler Forbes’s free kick from distance on thirteen minutes was held by Will Puddy.
A minute later Padraig Amond found Forbes whose shot was blocked. Just past the quarter hour mark Josh Smile’s high free kick was claimed by Day.
On twenty minutes Jack Compton’s free kick from wide on the right was headed over by Alex Ferguson.
A minute later the Exiles defence failed to deal with another free kick and Nat Jarvis volleyed just wide.
On twenty nine minutes Cooper’s free kick from out wide was tipped over the bar by Puddy, a minute later Amond miss-kicked in front of goal. On thirty two minutes Keanu Marsh-Brown went on a strong run and his eventual shot brought a diving save from Puddy.
Five minutes later Forbes’s ball to Marsh-Brown saw the latter’s shot clear the bar.
Puddy then held Cooper’s shot from distance. Before the break Matty Dolan’s free kick cleared the bar whilst Amond’s cross saw Jamille Matt’s touch go wide of a post.
After the interval Matt Smith clipped a shot over the Newport bar whilst Josh Sheehan’s free kick at the other end was also high.
Day then blocked a shot from Chambers before the Exile keeper was replaced by a trialist.
Compton scored the only goal of the game on sixty seven minutes when he cut in from the right touch line before firing home with a rasping left-footed drive.
Chippenham then went on the front foot as Nick McCootie’s shot was blocked and a quarter of an hour from time Smile cut in from the left and his curling shot was just too high.
Six minutes later another Smile effort was deflected behind for a corner.
A minute from time George Rigg did well to dribble into the area before seeing his close range effort blocked by the keeper.
