On a scorching Bank Holiday Monday credit must go to both teams who put in an all action display to entertain the crowd of 528.
The Bluebirds recorded their first three Hardenhuish Park National South points in a thrilling game that almost saw the visitors snatch a late leveller.
In an end to end game Chippenham created the greater number of chances but after their visitors came back to 3-2 only a brilliant save from Jared Thompson in the fifth minute of stoppage time ensured victory.
In the very first minute Zac McEachran’s speculative shot was spilled then gathered by Thompson.
Five minutes later Dave Pearce’s shot was blocked by a Bluebird defender as the visitors opened the brighter.
Chippenham took the lead on seven minutes when Andy Sandell’s cross from the right was helped on by a Bluebird head and Will Richards headed past Jack Stevens.
Pearce then saw another effort blocked before they drew level on ten minutes when McEachran’s free kick went through the wall and past Thompson.
On the quarter hour mark Sandell’s cross was headed away for a corner in front of the lurking Dave Pratt.
Chippenham regained the lead on eighteen minutes when Sandell’s long throw bounced over everyone in the box including Stevens and James Guthrie crashed the ball into the roof of the net at the back post.
The lively McEachran then shot wide after a surging run.
Just before the half hour Sandell’s free kick went just over the bar, whilst Rob Sinclair’s run and shot went straight at Thompson.
Five minutes after the break Sandell’s long throw glanced off Mike Jones’s head to the keeper.
Stevens then did well to push away Sandell’s low shot after the striker tried to place his shot across the keeper.
Chippenham scored their third on fifty six minutes after a superb run by Pratt took him down the touch line before cutting into the area where he laid the ball for Sandell to side-foot home.
Just after the hour mark a quick free kick from the Bluebirds saw Richards attempt to lob Stevens who had come off his line but the keeper saved the effort.
Sandell then saw his shot deflected for a fruitless corner.
Stevens then dived to push away substitute Matt Smith’s shot.
Oxford were handed a way back midway through the half when a home attack broke down and lone defender Greg Tindle conceded a penalty when he fouled Godfrey Poku and Matt Paterson beat Thompson from the spot.
The Bluebirds faithful had seen their side concede two goal leads in each of their previous two matches and nerves were stretched as Oxford looked for an equaliser.
After Thompson’s super save keeper Stevens came up for a last minute corner but to many in the crowd’s relief the ball was headed over the bar.
