WEALDSTONE 4 4 CHIPPENHAM TOWN – Sat 21st April 2018

By

For any neutral this was probably one of the National South games of the season with eight goals, three sendings-off and a smattering of bookings.

For any neutral this was probably one of the National South games of the season with eight goals, three sendings-off and a smattering of bookings.
The game was given extra spice as Chippenham came up against former striker Dave Pratt who moved to the North London club in controversial circumstances in December 2017.
Pratt scored a quick fire double as his side fought back from 3-1 down to lead 4-3 before Chippenham hit a deserved late leveller as Pratt was upstaged by his old strike partner Andy Sandell who hit his first hat trick of the season for the Bluebirds.
Chippenham attacked in the first minute with Sandell’s cross going from right to left where Jon Beedon’s header back across goal went just beyond the reach of James Gutrie.
The Bluebirds took the lead on two minutes when Sandell’s cross was knocked forward to Nick McCootie who controlled the ball before executing a superb overhead kick past Jonathan North.
Seven minutes later McCootie held the ball up well before laying it to Sandell who fired home.
Wealdstone pulled a goal back on thirteen minutes when a corner was met beyond the far post by defender Glenn Wilson who converted from close in.
On sixteen minutes McCootie saw his effort chalked off due to an earlier infringement.
Sandell then raced clear on twenty minutes before sliding the ball past the advancing North to restore Chippenham’s two goal lead.
Midway through the half, Wealdstone were forced to replace injured goal scorer Wilson due to injury.
Sandell then shot wide before Beedon wriggled into the area and the ball broke to Sandell who knocked it wide from close in.
Just before the half hour mark Bradley Bubb tried to lob Jason Matthews who was standing in for the unavailable Jared Thompson, but his forty yard effort went wide.
A Stones corner was then returned to Ricky Wellard whose cross was glanced wide by Jerome Okimo.
Sandell then played McCootie in behind the home defence but his shot went over the bar. Guthrie’s corner then saw McCootie’s shot just held on the line by North.
A minute before the break Wealdstone reduced the arrears from Bubb’s overhead kick following a right wing cross.
A minute later Chippenham were reduced to ten men as Dean Evans received a second caution.
Before the break Matthew Whichelow was off target for the hosts. Three minutes into the second half the home side were reduced to ten men as defender Eddie Oshodi was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Sandell.
On fifty seven minutes a long Sandell throw saw Will Richards’s effort blocked and his follow up shot went over the bar. On sixty two minutes Pratt made it 3-3 as he powerfully headed home substitute Ryan Sellers cross.
Chippenham were further depleted when half time substitute Alex Ferguson picked up two yellow cards inside a quarter of an hour. Wealdstone made the Bluebirds pay on sixty eight minutes when Pratt headed home a corner from the right to put the home side in front for the first time in the match.
Two minutes later substitute Matt Smith fired wide.
The Bluebirds completed the scoring on eighty one minutes when Smith’s shot was parried into the air by North and Sandell reacted quickest to head home.
Five minutes from time Guthrie’s free kick saw Sandell’s header saved by North.
On eighty nine minutes Wellard’s corner saw a goal mouth scramble and Matthews did superbly to get down to save.
In the third minute of stoppage time Sellars fired over from twenty five yards.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time Smith almost won it for Chippenham when his low shot was deflected just wide of a post.
