Chippenham pulled off one of their most impressive results since joining the National South as they accounted for previously unbeaten Billericay Town.
The table topping Essex side also conceded their first goals on the road and failed to score for the first time in 87 games, as Chippenham, with six players out injured, worked their socks off to more than match the big spending visitors.
The first half saw the Bluebirds defend manfully with centre back pairing Curtis McDonald, made captain for the day in Greg Tindle’s absence, and Will Richards superbly shackling Jake Robinson and Adam Cunnington.
Chippenham were the first to show as good work by Josh Smile saw him find Mike Jones but his third minute shot was off target.
Matt Smith then saw an effort blocked before Cunnington’s fourteenth minute header lacked the power to beat Will Henry.
On twenty three minutes former Bristol Rovers man Cunnington was shown a yellow card as his elbow resulted in McDonald having treatment to a bloody nose on the sidelines for seven minutes.
The Essex side threw men forward in an effort to open the scoring but as Chippenham defended manfully they failed to test Henry.
On thirty four minutes Sam Deering shot wide whilst four minutes later former Brighton striker Robinson, the division’s leading scorer, skewed a shot across the face of goal.
Cunnington then headed a cross from Joseph Kizzi wide as the visitors began to argue with themselves.
Billericay’s best chance fell to Robinson on forty five minutes following a long throw from Kizzi but he skied his effort over the bar from a yard out. Two minutes into stoppage time Cunnigton was played through with only Henry to beat but Jones superbly got back to poke the ball out for a fruitless corner.
Chippenham opened the scoring on fifty minutes as Nat Jarvis powerfully headed home Smile’s inswinging cross from the left.
Jarvis then saw a low shot saved by Wells whilst at the other end Cunnington’s effort was blocked and Simon Walton’s follow-up shot went wide.
The visitors then bolstered their attack with two substitutions but with Chippenham looking increasingly likely to hit them on the break they did so on sixty six minutes as Wells came to the edge of his area to block Nick McCootie’s effort with his feet but the ball broke to James Guthrie twenty five yards out and he smashed a low shot into the unguarded net.
Billericay responded by bringing on an extra striker but again it was Chippenham who looked more likely to score as good work by Matt Smith saw Smile’s shot blocked at his near post by Wells’s feet.
At the other end substitute Adam Combes had a shot blocked before Chippenham broke again on eighty two minutes as Jarvis played the ball to Jones in the area but the ball hit his foot and went straight to Wells.
Four minutes from time substitute Karnell Chambers’s shot was also blocked by the keeper’s legs, before the referee blew for a famous victory.
