Chippenham Town finally recorded three points against their Berkshire opponents at the tenth attempt, having failed to do so in their previous nine meetings in either the Southern League or National South.
The first half suggested this was again going to prove to be a fruitless encounter as the Crusaders took a sixth minute lead through Danilo Orsi-Dadomo who poked home a cross from Darren Foxley.
Two minutes later Josh Smile’s corner flashed across the face of goal before being deflected behind for a second flag kick which saw Nick McCootie’s effort blocked on the line.
On eleven minutes Hungerford keeper Michael Luyaambula came out on top against Karnell Chambers.
Seven minutes later James Guthrie’s shot was blocked and the loose ball fell to Smile but his shot looped wide.
On twenty minutes McCootie found the back of the net but his effort was ruled out for off side.
Orsi-Dadomo should have doubled the lead on twenty nine minutes when Kieran Parselle failed to clear or pass the ball back to Will Puddy and the Hungerford striker was left clear but his effort was blocked by a covering defender and Foxley fired the loose ball wide. Foxley then hit a free kick straight at Puddy, whilst at the other end Chambers’ shot was deflected narrowly past the top left hand corner.
The balance of the match changed just before the break as the visitors’ Cameron Hargreaves, on-loan from Bristol Rovers, crudely brought down Smile and referee Richard Gardner produced a red card.
At the start of the second half Chippenham introduced Jack Compton and immediately looked a different side. Compton’s forty seventh minute cross saw Jarvis’ header saved by Luyambula, before the Chippenham substitute fired wide from thirty yards.
Puddy then did well to tip over a headed effort following a corner whilst on fifty five minutes Tariq Ossai’s shot was deflected behind.
On fifty nine minutes Chippenham appeals for a penalty after George Rigg’s cross appeared to hit a hand were waved away but the ball was returned to the middle by Compton and Jarvis rose highest to superbly head the Bluebirds level.
On sixty three minutes a Bluebird corner saw Will Richards’ goal bound effort hit a Chippenham player on the line.
Twenty minutes from time substitute Rhys Davies produced a teasing cross and Jarvis again made no mistake as he headed the Bluebirds in front. On eighty one minutes McCootie’s shot was blocked by a defender before he saw his ninetieth minute header slam on to the cross bar, again from a Compton cross.
As the home crowd were left baying for the final whistle as Hungerford forced two stoppage time corners, McCootie won the ball in the Hungerford half and burst into the box to delicately chip the ball over the advancing Luyambula to ensure the Bluebirds remain in eleventh place.
