It was a really good ‘Good Friday’ for the Bluebirds as they became the only side to record a National South League double over champions elect Torquay United.
The ‘all ticket’ match was played out in brilliant sunshine in front of Hardenhuish Park’s largest crowd of 1906 for some while.
Over a 1,000 supporters made their way up from Devon and bedecked in their yellow tops and ‘occasional’ flares it was certainly a very noisy and colourful occasion.
The Gulls dominated the opening half but the hard and bobbly playing surface did not favour their passing game and a superb rearguard action by the Bluebird back five matched up by relentless harrying and chasing by the rest of the team held the full time visitors, containing several on loan League players at bay.
The first chance actually fell to the home side in the second minute as George Rigg’s shot lacked power and ran harmlessly across the area. Torquay then won a series of free kicks and corners but their only efforts of note in the opening quarter of an hour saw Kalvin Kalala set up Jake Andrews, who had previously enjoyed three on-loan spells at the Bluebirds from Bristol City, but he dragged his shot wide whilst Jamie Reid’s shot was blocked.
On twenty minutes Nick McCootie’s touch spun off a defender and into the hands of Shaun MacDonald.
Chippenham opened the scoring on twenty four minutes when Dean Evans headed home Josh Smile’s free kick.
The goal was met by yellow flares from the Torquay end but quickly dealt with by the stewards.
As half time drew close another Reid shot was blocked.
At the interval the Gulls brought on seventeen year old Olaf Koszela who certainly livened up their attack.
Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, another Bristol City loanee, found Reid on forty nine minutes but his shot went across the face of goal.
The impressive Frank Vincent, on-loan from Premiership outfit AFC Bournemouth, floated a cross that was met by Jamie Sendles-White but his touch went just wide.
Lemonheigh-Evans then cut in but his shot was deflected for a corner as Torquay continued to have the better of play after the break.
The Gulls equalised on fifty eight minutes when Ben Wynter’s diagonal ball into the box was headed home by Koszela for his first goal for the Devon side.
On the hour Evans’ headed effort from a Smile corner went across goal whilst a minute later a Rhys Davies free kick ended with Kieran Parselle’s header hitting the top of the cross bar.
The winning goal came on sixty nine minutes when Nat Jarvis laid the ball back to Davies who crossed for McCootie to glance a header past MacDonald.
Both sides then made double substitutions with Smile having to leave the field with a leg injury.
Referee Richard Aspinall indicated a minimum of six minutes stoppage time, the most seen at Hardenhuish Park this season, but the Bluebirds held out as Jean-Yves Koue Niate headed wide from a good chance in the ninety fourth minute.
