This was a great advert for club rugby with 4 teams meeting in a friendly & well contested tournament to remember one of our players & club stalwart Stuart "Cockers" Sams.

The inaugural "Cockers Cup" saw teams from Eccleshall RUFC, Northwich RUFC & Capenhurst RUFC travel tyo The Cheshire County Sports Club for a pre season tournament which was a great advert for club rugby & a great and fitting tribute to Stuart, a former player, stalwart & sponsor.

Christleton & Northwich kicked off proceedings and the home side was quickly into our stride playing some good cohesive rugby and after a series of well orcastrated drives let the backs lose for Gaz to score the first try of the day.

After a promising start we then seemed to lose our structure and despite having the majority of the posession Northwich came back strongly, and made the most of the pressure they exerted to score a try out wide to level the scores.

At times our decision making lacked clarity often compounding one error with another when playing out of defence shipping another score after gifting posession to Northwich close to our try line.

A second try in the second half reduced the arrears but with the kick missed a slender advantage to Northwich into the closing minutes.

Some decent chances were still created but often the final pass was rushed in the face of a determined defence and the final score 10 v 12.

A scratch Cape side (including some players from the other clubs making up numbers then played our an entertaining 5 v 5 draw with Eccleshall with no quarter asked nor given.

Eccleshall scored a well worked try after good work by the big #5 and mobile #8 making space for the centre to score out wide. Cape were not to be put off and a determined series of drives worked into a good position for Dan to romp over & tie the scores.

Both sided pushed to find a winner but dogged defence won out. 5 v 5 Final score.

Christleton then played Eccleshall & a much better performance in parts with some lovely rugby against a good side, Eccleshall opened the scoring again following strong work at the breakdown by the 5 & 8 and being well finished out wide.

A second try from close range, after an attacking phase was turned over and counter attacked opened up a 0 v 10 lead for the visitors.

A second half comeback looked on the cards whith another well worked try but Eccleshalls defensive sets kept the lead to full time 5 v 10

Capenhurst & Northwich then played out a great game,Northwich going three scores ahead only to see Capenhurst reply with three of their own to level things up at 21 v 21 only to see Northwich edge ahead again with a late score & then hang on for vistory.

The cup came down to whoever won between Eccleshall & Northwich and a pretty even contest was edged by Eccleshall with a score in each half , one of which was converted against a converted try from Northwich.

The final game saw Christleton v Capenhurst battle out with both side scoring 3 tries (although Chabbs had a try dissalowed under the posts as adjudged to have lost control of the ball which he disputed afterwards).

It was great to see Stuarts family & friends there to celebrate & remember him allbeit tinged with sadness it was the sort of day he would have loved.

Great credit to all the players proving that club rugby is still in great shape, players happy to fill in if needed to help out numbers or cover for injuries in other sides without hesitation & just playing for the love of the game.

Congratulations to Eccleshall worthy winners, looking forward to the start of the new season.
