Match Report: Macclesfield Womens 2 vs City of Manchester Womens 2

Ellen Johns17 Nov 2025 - 17:25

Venue: Macclesfield Final Score: Macclesfield Womens 2 4 - 1 City of Manchester Womens 2

Our Women’s 2s arrived in Macclesfield with a reshuffled squad and a good dose of optimism after calling in several reinforcements: Charlotte S and Anna from Salford Uni, Jasmin fresh from her first training session on Thursday, and Charlotte C who dug out her kit and squeezed the game in between paramedic shifts, fitting right into our back line. The warm up set the tone for the day as we fired shots toward a building site and watched ball after ball disappear under a metal fence, which tends to happen when your keeper is so sharp that every loose ball becomes a daring escape attempt.
Macclesfield started the match at full pace and showed exactly how well drilled they were, putting away three tidy goals in the first twenty minutes despite a flurry of brave saves from Charlotte and determined defensive work that kept the score from becoming far more painful. As the half went on we found our rhythm, pushing passes neatly through the channels and working our way into the game with more confidence. We also managed something rare and worth celebrating: we did not concede a single short corner, which is practically a collector’s item in a testing away match like this.
Half time arrived with the lifesaving support of turbo charged jelly babies, and once they kicked in, we came out with fresh purpose. The second half was a much more even battle, with strong runs through midfield and quicker transitions that kept Macclesfield on the back foot. Our hard work paid off when Robyn capitalised on a cheeky goalmouth kerfuffle and bundled the ball over the line, earning us our well-deservedgoal. By the end of the half, we had matched them one all, and both umpires even said we were the better team after the break, which was generous coming from officials who had earlier developed selective hearing when our captain asked about a tackle that could have been reviewed by the RFU.
The comedy reel was impressive. The match ball kept sneaking under the fence so often that we lost count and began to treat each replacement like a small victory. Ruby, our ever-reliable left back, got taken out with a move straight from a rugby training ground, and the player responsible defended herself with the timeless phrase: “It’s called playing hockey,” which was bold considering hockey is famously non-contact. Maybe she meant ice hockey? She may want to check the rulebook. Meanwhile, Donkey of the Day went to Caitlin for a beautifully timed fall that almost everyone managed to witness, admire, and discuss at length.
Man of the Match went to Jasmin, who despite only one training session made standout runs through midfield and broke lines with the confidence of someone who has been playing with us for months. The final score of 4–1 did not match the fight we showed, especially in that much stronger second half. Between the missing match balls, the unexpected rugby, the selective-hearing officiating, and our saving grace of a goal, it was a very promising performance for a team who are starting to gel a lot better.
