Thoughts from Del Davies

I first came across Terry in the early sixties. He had a thick head of black hair and was about five stone overweight. He was also one of the few who owned a car - not any old car but a Ford Consul 1600E.

Terry was content to play his rugby in the B team with Dinky and Bilaris. However on Easter tour 1967 to Cornwall he was called upon to play for the 1st team. He played well and enjoyed himself. We didn't see much of him during the summer of 1967 but when he turned up at the beginning of the season he had lost about five stone due to a fitness regime during the summer. From then on he took his rugby seriously ( well fairly seriously) and eventually became a regular in the 1st team.
It was Easter tour 1968 to Sheffield that he excelled himself off the pitch when he drank three dozen eggs ( or 35 to be exact). He drank a dozen in the hotel we were staying at and later on that evening we met up at the hotel that Osterley RFC were staying at. One of their member challenged Terry to an egg drinking contests. Two dozen eggs were produce and a dozen placed in each glass. Terry knocked his back in no time. The Osterley man could only swallow one so Terry knocked back the remainder of his eggs as well.
He acquired the nickname of Oiseau during the 1973 tour to France.
Terry seemed to have phenomenal memory. He would remember matches and incidents from years gone by. His memory came in useful when drinking in a crowd. He would always remember whose round it was next !
Terry , like so many of that era, was a character who made playing rugby for the CS so enjoyable especially on tour.

RIP Terry Bird
