7 Questions to First Team Coach - Jon Davy

7 Questions to First Team Coach - Jon Davy

Club Man25 Jan 2018 - 16:05

Thanks Jon for your time

How did you get involved with Coaching football?
As an apprentice at Scunthorpe United we did our FA Level 1 coaching badges. The FA tutor then invited me to join him in America to work on some soccer camps and now over 20 years later i find myself here with Clee Town FC and working with the 1st team.

You coach a junior side what enjoyment does that bring you?
I haved really enjoyed watching my boys grow and develop into some good little football players. I have been coaching my boys junior team now for 7 seasons, 6 of them season we played in both the Grimsby (on a Sunday) and Scunthorpe (on a Saturday) leagues to get the boys as much playing time as possible. I still have a lot of my orignal players who started with me at 6 years old, but sadly along the way we have lost a few to professional academies (but as a grassroots coach thats my job).

Is there one thing you would like see changing in coach qualifications?
I think the biggest obstacle to coaching qualifications in the cost. Qualification seem to be getting more and more expensive. When i did my UFEA 'A' badge 10 years ago it cost more the £4,000, i would like to think how much it would cost me today!

What is the one thing you would say to anyone thinking of doing a coaching course?
Do it! Once your involved, you'll be hooked. Its great to give back to a sport you love and are passionate about. I would also say, looking on-line and ask your clubs is there are any coaching bursaries to help fund your course.

You joined Marcus in the first team set up in the summer, have you been welcomed to the club?
My first few months at the club have been great, everyone has been very welcoming to me and my family and i very much feel part of the club. The Gaffa has been very supportive and has given me a lot of freedom at training to get the 1st team in shape and ready for the upcoming games.

Has anything surprised you at Cleethorpes Town since you joined?
The talent of the squad that the management team are puting together. We have some very, very good players heres. In Grimsby and Cleethorpes we do have and do produce a lot of local tealented football players and it great to see so many wanting to stay or come back and play for the club. This can only be good for the future of the team and the club.

What do you enjoy doing apart from football?
My wife would say nothing, as i eat and sleep football. My son (14) plays football (for me) and the Grimsby Schools & District, my daughter (4) has just started training and playing with Clee Town girls junior section, so if i'm not coaching it, i'm watching it.
