Each week, Grimsby Town legend Gary Childs will be writing a column. This week Gary has written a short overview of his footballing career.
Starting at 9 years of age with my local team in Birmingham, I progressed through the district and county teams before joining West Bromwich Albion School of Excellence at the age of 13. I stayed with them on leaving school doing a 1 year apprenticeship at 16 and was offered a full professional contract at 17 around the same time as earning my first of 4 England youth caps.
I then moved to Walsall on loan originally before signing permanently at 19 years of age and stayed for 3 seasons before joining my hometown club Birmingham City. After 2 seasons with the Blues I joined Grimsby Town and stayed for 9 seasons before leaving and taking up my first managerial job at Doc Martins Division 1 side Wisbech on a full time basis.
My next move after 2 seasons with Wisbech was to Boston united and gaining promotion to the Conference with them at the end of my pro/semi-pro playing career. Since then I have been involved with coaching roles at the Grimsby Town School of Excellence under 16’s, a level 1 coaching assessor, Grimsby Town football in the Community Officer and Grimsby Institute Football Development Centre Director up to the present day.
I look forward over the coming weeks to sharing with you some of my experiences including the highs and low times of my career in football
