In-depth interview: Winger Peter Winn on life as an Owl

From Grimsby to Scunthorpe to scoring against Tim Krul in the FA Cup...read about Peter Winn's time as a footballer

How would you sum up last season for you personally? Would you say it was a success?
Last season was a nightmare to be honest. It just went wrong from day 3. I think when I got injured and then just couldn't shake it off then second half of the season was better as I got games under my belt and felt a lot better than the first half of season.

You signed from Chester FC in July of this year, how did the move come about?
To be honest I was going to give it all up. I lost my way and just had enough with the travelling and then me and Andy Cawte got talking and it went from there.

You spent 5 years at Scunthorpe United earlier in your career, did they help you develop as a player?
Well I actually was there from 12 years old and I was a goalkeeper until the age of 16 so yes they help me change and develop into an outfield player.

You also ended up as Stevenge's 2nd choice goalkeeper, how did that come about?
Well I was a goalkeeper from 12 to 16 so they knew I use to play there and the sub keeper at the time got injured so I was just there in case I needed to be.

Scoring against Newcastle United in the FA Cup must have been one of your career highlights, tell us about that night.

That and getting promoted was career highs. I played up top that night and made a diagonal run through the defence and chipped it over Tim Krul, then went mental celebrating!

What sort of things have you been up to during the off-season?
Nothing to special really, went to Madrid with my wife for our anniversary and spend time with the kids and then got a proper job for the first time!

Have you enjoyed pre-season? Is this something you look forward to or dread?
Well I enjoy all aspects of football weather it's pre season or in the season. I don't dread it even though I don't like the running part.

Nothing beats competitive football I suppose, how much are you looking forward to the new campaign?
I am looking forward to get stuck in. It should be good as we have a great team to compete with.

Playing with Chester FC then on loan at Kings Lynn must of been difficult with all the travelling. How did this effect you? Did you have to move home or did you commute?
Well with Chester they wouldn't put me up in accommodation so had to travel or find my own which was difficult so I just got fed up of it and didn’t want to be away from the kids as Gracie had just been born as well! So I had to commute but at Kings Lynn it was ok because it was only 2 nights a week.

How do you expect us to do this season?
Well I expect us to do well. We have a great squad of players and if we can click early enough we will be fine.

Marcus has a successful time with the club, why do you think this is?
He knows what he wants and needs from his players and as well as having a good football brain he has the right people around him with his coaching staff.

You've played all over the park throughout your career, what would you say was your more natural position?
well my most natural position is on either wing but I don't mind playing in any position to be honest.

There have been rumours during the summer about players been approached to go elsewhere but every first team regular from last season have been re-signed. Does this show how good the team spirit in the camp is?
Well I wasn't aware of other players being approached to be honest but it's good that you have the team together still with every player from last season so they still have the team spirt and they can help integrate the new players to there style without having to make too many changes around the team

Lastly, is promotion the target for the new season?
Yes, promotion is the reason why we do this so I see it as if we're not looking for promotion what are we doing it for? Promotion is a must this season as we all want to progress!
