RECORD BREAKERS!

RECORD BREAKERS!

Craig Kendall7 Dec 2015 - 15:10

How do the top Owls Scorers compare to the likes of Jamie Vardy & Co

Last Saturday at around 6pm the whole footballing world held its breath as Jamie Vardy latched onto a superb Christian Fuchs pass. Could this be the moment that the long standing Premier League consecutive scoring record be broken…YES!

Vardy brilliantly slid the ball past David De Gea and as he wheeled away social media went crazy, 26,839 tweets mentioning the Leicester striker’s name in the minute following his goal.

What an achievement in arguably the most difficult league in the world. But…is this feat really that amazing? With 100’s of league through the world, let’s take a look!

Let’s start with the Premier League. Jamie Vardy now leads the way with his tally of 11 consecutive league games scored in. Ruud van Nistelrooy follows next scoring in 10 then 8 games on different occasions. Five players have scored in seven games in a row and include Mark Stein (Chelsea), Ian Wright (Arsenal), Alan Shearer (Newcastle), Thierry Henry (Arsenal) and Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal).

Looking through the entire English League history, you would have to go back to 1950/51 as Stan Mortensen holds the record for scoring in consecutive appearances as he netted 15 times in a row for Blackpool.

Elsewhere, the longest scoring streaks for league games are Lionel Messi (La Liga) with 21 games, Gerd Muller (Bundesliga) with 16 and Gabriel Batistuta (Seria A) with 11.

To scroll the leagues below the football league would take an eternity, but to compare those records above with the Cleethorpes Town’s, it just shows how good those above are.

Since the start of the NCEL era for the Owls, there have been just six different players to have scored in at least three consecutive league games. Owls record goalscorer Marc Cooper leads the way scoring in six league games on the bounce.

Cooper has also scored in five league games in a row last year, alongside Chris Funnell towards the end of the 2013/14 season. Five times a player has scored in four games in a row, these include Cooper twice, Jonathan Oglesby twice and Louis Grant once.

On eight occasions a player has scored in three games and they are Marc Cooper three times, Brody Robertson twice, Nathan Emson twice and Jonathan Oglesby once.

A simple search from this season alone shows plenty of strikers from other clubs in the NCEL achieving similar feats to those of Cleethorpes Town.

However, Ashley Flynn is the stand out man of the NCEL, having scored 50 goals so far for AFC Emley and between 10th October and 7th November he netted 18 times in eight consecutive league games.

Other notable scoring streaks this season alone include (games scored in a row denoted in brackets):

Scott Phillips - Barton Town Old Boys (6)
Alec Dention -Clipstone (8)
Kieran Ryan - AFC Emley (6)
Joel Hughes - Yorkshire Amateur (5)

As shown above, it may be easy to score in 3,4 or 5 games and this is not a rare feat, however anything over 8 is very rare. It has been a fantastic time for Vardy since his move up the ranks from Non-League football and just shows that anything can be achieved if you set goals and try your best!
