Cleethorpes Town will face Barton Town Old Boys in Round 2 of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup, after they won their first round tie 3-2 tonight. Two goals from Luke Mascall either side of half time were instrumental in helping Andy Liddles team to their second win over local rivals Grimsby Borough this season.
The game was everything you would expect from a derby. Scrappy, feisty and feircely competetive from start to finish.
Both sides started well. Clee put together a good string of passes in the middle of the park but the home side looked sprightly in defence, giving them no breathing space to create a chance.
Clee's most notable chance early on came when Marc Cooper shot wide following some heavy pressure by the Borough back line.
In what was a very physical scrappy game, the referee did well to play the advantage, on occasions when he could have quite easily given decisions either way.
The Owls were left frustrated when Luke Mascall broke through on goal and appeared to be obstructed by an elbow, but no foul was given. Clee also had a decent penalty shout turned down.
The game saw its first goal five minutes before the break. Borough's defence failed to deal with a long ball and the pace of Mascall, who cut inside and slotted home to give Clee the lead.
After an end to end start to the second half, Liddle's men doubled their lead through Marc Cooper who capitalised on a goalmouth scramble on 55 minutes.
Grimsby nearly responded immediately, 'Keeper Drury failed to collect an easy ball, instead diving straight over it and having to settle for a goal-line clearance. He wasn't so lucky next time. Another goal mouth scramble on the hour paved the way for Borough to fire home to make it 2-1.
In true local derby style, the discipline of both clubs was called into question when a player from either side went into the book within 2 minutes of each other.
Grimsby were pushing for an equaliser in a game that, in all fairness, remained equal throughout. They eventually found it on 75 minutes, Drury saving the initial shot, but unable to stop the Borough strikers pouncing on the rebound.
The game became heated in the closing stages as both sides searched for a winner. Grimsby were reduced to ten men after a midfielder was dismissed following an exchange of words with the referee.
That gave The Owls the lift they needed. A long ball from Steve Cooper found Luke Mascall again, who had shown excellent pace and determination throughout, and who nodded home to send an ecstatic Cleethorpes through to round 2.
A fantastic game to watch and a brilliant result for The Owls, who have won 5 on the bounce in all competitions. Congratulations to Andy Liddle and his team, who will now face Barton Town Old Boys in the next round
