The Owls saw off relegation threatened Liversedge with a 3-0 win at Bradley Pitches; after a Tom Brook own goal was sandwiched between a header from Alex Flett and low drive from Marc Cooper.
Liversedge were 53 points behind third placed Cleethorpes before the kick-off but the visitors did not perform like a team that were bottom of the table in the opening minutes.
The first real sight of goal came after fearless play from “Sedge”, who worked the ball up to their striker Beny Egiehon. He created space for himself with some good footwork before dragging his shot just wide of the right hand post.
In the 17th minute the Cleethorpes post was left shuddering by the impressive Regan Fish who had capitalized on a loose ball that had been given away on the edge of the box. The winger smashed a thunderbolt that clipped the inside of the right hand post.
Cleethorpes did begin to impose themselves on the game and started to test their opponent’s backline. Some neat build up play created an opportunity for midfielder Caine Winfarrah but he was denied by determined Liversedge defending.
The Owls did breach the Liversedge defence in the 27th minute after the ball was clipped in behind to Danny Trott. The forward who scored twice on Saturday against Pontefract, steadied himself before picking out his strike partner Marc Cooper in the box but he was unable to convert the cross.
Two minutes later Cooper’s team were in front. Alex Flett surged into the box from midfield attempting a one two with a team-mate; his pass looped into the air, after an intervention from an opposing defender, and the midfielder was the first to react as he rose well to find the bottom left hand corner of the net.
The second goal followed in the second period. Danny Trott again found space on the right flank and this time his cross was converted, by the unfortunate Tom Brook who slid in-front of his own goalkeeper to divert the ball into his own net.
Nine minutes later Cooper was on the scoresheet. The striker showed the predatory instinct that has seen him score twenty eight goals in all competitions this season, as he punished a defensive error with a deadly drive that found the bottom left hand corner.
It could have been more, Cooper hit the goalkeepers water bottle rather than the back of the net as gaps started to appear in the later stages of the game and substitute Luke Mascall also saw an effort creep just wide of the left hand post. It finished 3-0 and Cleethorpes moved to within three points of Tadcaster Albion ahead of this weekend’s trip to the i2i Stadium.
