10 men earn the points at Eccleshill

Cleethorpes Town headed to Eccleshill United knowing that they had to win and in the end they produced a performance full of grit and determination as they earned the victory after being down to ten men after Christopher Gordon was shown a red card.

The dismissal came midway through the second half with the scores level and Gordon had been adjudged to tackled over the ball, Cleethorpes with no choice but to go for the 3 points push attacking players onto the pitch and and the winner came as Alex Flett won the ball back on the edge of the Eccleshill box and his ball through saw sub Belding step over the ball with Marc Cooper behind him the opportunity to blast the ball into the top corner to score the winner.

The first half Cleethorpes where the dominant force and shown there intention from the off when Luke Mascall forced a superb save from Carl Martins in the Eccleshill goal. Marc Cooper also had a couple of chances but could not quite convert them, Cleethorpes took a deserved lead as a corner into the box was headed down by Gordon where Marc Cooper was on hand to poke the ball home to grab his first of the game.

Craig Mitchell saw a shot deflect wide, Marc Cooper then went on a fine run but his shot was well saved by Martins as Cleethorpes dominated the first half, which drew to a close as Gordon headed over from a Barrett free kick.

The second half was a different story as the Eccleshill did not look like the same side in the first half but neither did Cleethorpes it was role reversal as Eccleshill was doing all the attacking and Scott Drury was soon forced into action as he made a fine save with his feet and had to watch the ball spin frustratingly wide for the hosts. Then Alex Rouse for the hosts was causing problems giving full back Lowe plenty to think about teed up Drake Trease who shot wide, then Rouse found space in the box who equalised deservedly for the hosts

Cleethorpes had to respond and Marc Cooper saw an effort saved before Gordon was dismissed, this had the strange effect of galvanising as they had nothing to lose and took the lead through M Cooper again but Cleethorpes did not stop pushing forward in the closing stages as with Flint shooting over, as Eccleshill could not find there momentum that they had at the start of the second half.

The win secured the points and with the games running out Cleethorpes still require points to be dropped by the top two in the final games of the season but with both of them playing each other on Saturday could this provide an opening for Cleethorpes but first Cleethorpes have to register the 3 points in Sheffield on Tuesday evening when they visit Hallam.
