FINAL DAY JOY FOR CLEE!

The Owls battled back superbly to claim a 2-1 verdict over Ossett United, which confirmed a 9th-placed finish in the East Division.

After falling behind, goals in the latter stages from Alex Flett and Sam Kay ensured that the large amount of travelling fans went away in high spirits.

There were to be two changes from the last outing – Tom Jamieson and Josh Venney came into the following team:

Keeper: Ben Bottomley
Defence: Tom Jamieson, Paul Walker, Dan Gallimore, AJ Adelekan
Midfield: Josh Venney, Alex Flett (c), Sam Kay
Attack: Harvey Tomlinson, Josh Walker, Curtis Bateson

Subs: Louis Boyd, Tim Lowe, Will Annan, Max Adamson, James McKeown (gk)

It was to be a memorable afternoon for Alex Flett. Making his 500th appearance for the blue & black, the captain was presented with a commemorative shirt & bottle of fizz before the start.

Also, both sides formed a guard of honour to allow Alex to enjoy a generous and well-merited round of applause for reaching his milestone match.

When the action got underway, the visitors held sway through the initial skirmishes but could not find the decisive moment.

Forward Walker demonstrated clever skill to engineer a shooting chance, which was deflected wide. Then, Venney fired over the crossbar and Bateson drew a save from Hiddleston.

Following a terrific move, loanee Tomlinson was denied in the 27th minute by a clean tackle from a covering defender.

The best moment of the half came in the shadow of the interval. Bateson robbed an opponent before playing a neat 1-2. Unfortunately, from an Owls’ perspective, the winger’s drive was athletically stopped by Hiddleston.

After absorbing plenty of pressure during the first 45, United sprung into life to grab the initiative in the 54th minute. Sam Tingle provided a good finish to conclude some nice build-up play.

Despite the setback, Clee maintained their collective composure to eventually earn all the spoils.

It was perhaps destined for Alex Flett to score on his big day and the skipper did not disappoint. Latching onto an opportunity around 20-yards out, a low piledriver simply flew into the corner of the net.

Venney very nearly scored shortly afterwards but it was Sam Kay who scored the winner in the last seconds of normal time.

The midfielder, who has impressed since joining from Tadcaster, latched onto a loose ball to convert from close range.

After the final whistle, the Golden Boot was awarded to Will Annan, who narrowly edged the prize, a goal clear of Curtis Bateson, Alex Flett and Josh Walker. Congratulations, Will!
